Specialist Safeguarding Consultant, Safeguarding In Schools
After six months off school recuperating from meningitis at the age of 14, Andrew Hall was moved out of his comprehensive school’s top stream and into bottom sets. Shocked by the poor teaching and low expectations, Andrew was inspired by one remarkable teacher to improve the school experience for vulnerable students.
Andrew started his career as a primary school teacher, and soon started to develop the skills needed to engage pupils with significant barriers to their learning.
Particularly interested in supporting young people with mental ill-health, Andrew was appointed to the headship of a school for long-stay patients in a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital.
One of the first teachers to be awarded the National Professional Qualification for Headship, Andrew Hall went on to work with Cambridge Education Associates as a headteacher focussing on raising achievement and aspiration in schools for secondary-aged pupils with challenging behaviour.
After thirty years supporting vulnerable pupils across a wide-range of settings, Andrew now shares his expertise and experiences with schools across the country, helping them keep all children safe from harm. Andrew’s safeguarding work focusses on the needs of schools ensuring that he shares practical strategies that really make a difference.
Andrew Hall is the author of the Safeguarding Handbook, the definitive guide to safeguarding for headteachers and Designated Safeguarding Leads. He writes the free weekly Safeguarding Briefing for anyone interested in keeping children and young people safe.
